UPDATED: Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. All over the world, Jews and Christians and many others are remembering the most catastrophic event in the history of modern Judaism — the systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime during World War II.

Today is also the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp by the Soviet Red Army on January 27th, 1944.

Sadly, too many people — especially young people — don’t really know what happened. They’ve never been taught. Or they’ve not paid attention. But we must never forget. If you’re a Christian — and especially if you’re a pastor or Christian leader – may I especially appeal to you to use this year to learn more and teach more about the Holocaust, and to find ways to bless survivors, as well as to bless Israel and the Jewish people with the love of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?

As readers of this blog know, I am personally making 2014 a year of both of remembering the Holocaust and sharing its history and lessons with others. This will involve releasing The Auschwitz Escape; doing radio and TV interviews about the novel and the true stories that inspired it; speaking at various schools, conferences and churches; meeting with Holocaust survivors to hear their experiences; finding ways to do more to care for survivors in Israel who are poor and needy; visiting the U.S. Holocaust Museum; visiting Yad Vashem in Israel; encouraging Christian leaders to do more to teach the lessons of the Holocaust; encouraging joint events with Jewish and Christian leaders; and using plays and books and films and other resources to teach my own four sons about what happened and why.

There are many ways you can remember what happened and to help others to remember and learn vital lessons. Here are a few possibilities:

* Watch Schindler’s List with family and friends – Use discretion with younger children, but it’s a film every person must see. “Experience one of the most historically significant films of all time like never before with the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition of Steven Spielberg’s cinematic masterpiece, Schindler’s List. Winner of seven Academy Awardsr including Best Picture and Best Director, this incredible true story follows the enigmatic Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), who saved the lives of more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. It is the triumph of one man who made a difference and the drama of those who survived one of the darkest chapters in human history because of what he did. Meticulously restored from the original film negative in pristine high definition and supervised by Steven Spielberg, Schindler’s List is a powerful story whose lessons of courage and faith continue to inspire generations.” (Amazon description)

* Read The Hiding Place or watch The Hiding Place film with family and friends – “Corrie ten Boom was a woman admired the world over for her courage, her forgiveness, and her memorable faith. In World War II, she and her family risked their lives to help Jews escape the Nazis, and their reward was a trip to Hitler’s concentration camps. But she survived and was released-as a result of a clerical error-and now shares the story of how faith triumphs over evil. For thirty-five years Corrie’s dramatic life story, full of timeless virtues, has prepared readers to face their own futures with faith, relying on God’s love to overcome, heal, and restore. Now releasing in a thirty-fifth anniversary edition for a new generation of readers, The Hiding Place tells the riveting story of how a middle-aged Dutch watchmaker became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler’s death camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century.” (Amazon description)

* Read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl with your children, or watch the 1959 film, The Diary of Anne Frank — “Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic—a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.” (Amazon description)

* Read Night by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel on your own, or with your family – “Night is Elie Wiesel’s masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. This new translation by Marion Wiesel, Elie’s wife and frequent translator, presents this seminal memoir in the language and spirit truest to the author’s original intent. And in a substantive new preface, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man’s capacity for inhumanity to man. Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz and Buchenwald; it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be.” (Amazon description)

Happy Chanukah from The Joshua Fund! (Here are some resources for your family to learn about this important Jewish festival)

chanukah-candlesOn behalf of the entire staff and Board of The Joshua Fund, allow me to wish all of our Jewish friends — in Israel and around the world — a happy and blessed Chanukah holiday season. ‘Tis the season to remember the miracle of what the Lord did to protect the Jewish people from her enemies in ancient times, and give her light when it seemed that the light was about to be extinguished.

As many of you know, I’ve just returned from two weeks in Israel with several of our Joshua Fund team. I look forward to reporting soon on some of the key things I learned and heard on that trip. For now, though, I just want to express my thanksgiving for your faithful prayers and financial support of this ministry. We are seeing so many Jews and Arabs blessed and encouraged in so many practical and personal ways by the unconditional love of Christians from all over the world. Thank you so much for being part of this ministry.

Tonight, Lynn and our boys — along with my parents who are visiting from Colorado — began celebrating the first night of Chanukah by lighting the menorah. As we did, I couldn’t help but think of the many threats facing Israel and the Jewish people in our time. Yet I was also reminded of the good news that the God of Israel is committed to protecting His people and drawing them to Himself, just as the Holy Scriptures teach us. ”He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.” (Psalm 121:3-5)

I hope you’ll take some time to learn more about this important Jewish holiday, and take some time to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and for the Lord to show His grace and mercy to Israel and the Jewish people, as well as to Israel’s Arab and Persian neighbors and enemies. God loves all the people of the Middle East, not just one side or the other.

Here are some resources for you to use with your family and friends:

And it shall come to pass in that day That the remnant of Israel, And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, Will never again depend on him who defeated them, But will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. Isaiah 10:20 (NKJV)

The Feast of Dedication – Chanukah (Hanukkah) that literally means “Dedication”– is celebrated in 2013 beginning at sundown Wednesday, November 27th and continuing through Thursday, December 5th.  The history of Chanukah began with the capturing of Judea by Alexander the Great, who had conquered most of the ancient world of the Eastern Mediterranean.  As the generals of Alexander the Great’s army divided up the empire after the conquest, the area of Judea came under the control of Antiochus IV Epiphanies. Antiochus tried to force the Jews to accept the Greek culture, even resorting to defiling the Temple by erecting a statue of the god Zeus in the Holies of Holies. The Jewish people revolted and fought a courageous war to drive out the Greeks sometime around 163 B.C.  The Jewish people were then able to enter the city and worship in their Temple.

Thus began the Feast of Dedication which celebrates the great deliverance of the Jewish people from their oppressors and the dedication of the newly cleansed Temple. Jewish tradition states that there was only a one-day supply of the special oil that was burned in the Temple menorah, and the process to make more would take eight full days. As the people lit the menorah on the first day, and the oil miraculously burned for eight days while more was being prepared.

Today, Chanukah is celebrated with a nine branch candelabra or menorah. The eight branches recall the eight days the oil burned miraculously, while the ninth is the servant candle that is used to light the other candles. Each evening during the eight-day feast, one more candle is lit – one the first night, two the second night – until all eight candles plus the servant candle are burning brightly on the last night. The servant candle is called the “Shamash,” and literally means “makes use possible.” Chanukah, also called the Festival of Lights, is often accompanied by the giving of gifts.

Yeshua (Jesus) went to Jerusalem for the Feast of Dedication, and while in the Temple area He proclaimed His divinity: “I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30 NKJV)

  • One quick interesting factoid about Chanukah: This holiday is not mentioned in the Old Testament. That’s because the battles between the Jews and the Greeks, and the miracle of the oil, took place after the canon of the Old Scripture was completed. Yet, this holiday — the “Feast of Dedication” — is actually mentioned in the New Testament. In John 10:22 and the following verses, we see that Jesus was in Jerusalem to celebrate this Jewish Feast with His disciples.

They Will Seize Your Food and Resources: “Hoarding of Just About Anything Can Be Banned”

In March of 2012 President Obama signed an executive order which, among other things, gives the federal government authority over every resource and infrastructure element in the United States.

The new order provides specific definitions for each of these essential infrastructure elements, indicating that all resources, not just those owned by large farms and businesses, are to be directly controlled by the government.

The signing of the National Defense Resources Preparedness executive order grants the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Labor, the Department of Defense and other agencies complete control of all US resources, including the ability to seize, confiscate or re-delegate resources, materials, services, and facilities as deemed necessary or appropriate to promote the national defense as delegated by the following agencies:

That the government would seize energy depots, large farms, water reservoirs, and infrastructure-critical factories  in the midst of a widespread disaster is a given, but how far can they really go?

According to a detailed analysis by Code Green Prep,  The Present Legal Support for Seizing our Food and other Supplies suggests they can go all the way, including what you have stocked in your home pantry.

…the President can order the military to do pretty much anything to anyone, at any time, for any reason.

Specifically, he can order the military to ‘restore public order’ – and you might wonder what ‘public order’ is.  Truly, that’s a broad term capable of many meanings, and so too is the verb before the noun – ‘restore’.  What types of things can he order the military to do to restore the public order?  There’s no limit specified, so presumably whatever he (and he alone with no need to get approval from Congress) feels to be prudent, necessary, and appropriate.

The legal framework was partially outlined in the aforementioned executive order, but David Spero notes that it’s not the only law on the books:

Hoarding of Just About Anything Can Be Banned

These definitions are written in to the 1950 War and National Defense Defense (sic) Production Act, and so let’s see what the act itself has to say for itself.

Go directly to section 2072.  That’s the key part from our perspective.

§2072. Hoarding of designated scarce materials

In order to prevent hoarding, no person shall accumulate (1) in excess of the reasonable demands of business, personal, or home consumption, or (2) for the purpose of resale at prices in excess of prevailing market prices, materials which have been designated by the President as scarce materials or materials the supply of which would be threatened by such accumulation. The President shall order published in the Federal Register, and in such other manner as he may deem appropriate, every designation of materials the accumulation of which is unlawful and any withdrawal of such designation.

In making such designations the President may prescribe such conditions with respect to the accumulation of materials in excess of the reasonable demands of business, personal, or home consumption as he deems necessary to carry out the objectives of this Act [sections 2061 to 2170, 2171, and 2172 of this Appendix]. This section shall not be construed to limit the authority contained in sections 101 and 704 of this Act [sections 2071 and 2154 of this Appendix].

So the President can simply say that anything more than (for example) a week’s supply of food (and all the other things listed) is an amount ‘in excess of the reasonable demands of personal consumption’ and then order the Army to impound everything you have in excess of that amount.

We don’t want to get into the deeper darker conspiracy theories of what FEMA and HSD might be and do in the future, but we would like to be reassured that these theories truly are as impossible as we hope them to be.

We have no answer to these questions.  But we wish we did, because we can readily see a future scenario where the government (which, of course, always ‘knows best’) decides the best thing to do is to centralize all food and other survival resources – all the stuff listed above in the Executive Order – and then distribute it ‘fairly’ as it sees fit.

And, in case you didn’t read the first part of this two-part article, distributing ‘fairly’ is a code phrase that means ‘we’ll take as much as we can from people who have the thing, and then give it to people who don’t have the thing’.  The people without the thing doubtless feel that is fair, but how do you feel, as someone more likely to be losing your preps, while seeing people who laughed at you for being a prepper now having your preps passed over to them?

Part 1: Preppers Beware : Our “Hoarding” Can Be Deemed Illegal
Part 2:
The Present Legal Support for Seizing our Food and other Supplies

It should be clear from the laws that are already in effect that the government has given itself a legal pretext for confiscating anything they so choose in the midst of an emergency.

During Hurricane Katrina we saw officials go door-to-door to disarm Americans against their will and in violation of the Second Amendment. They had no authority to do so in a legal sense. They did it anyway.

Should an emergency befall the United States, the military, national guard, and local police operating under orders from the Department of Homeland Security will have carte blanche to do as they please.

For evidence of this look no further than Boston, Massachusetts just a few short months ago when the government declared nothing short of a de facto state of martial law. Militarized police forcibly entered the homes of hundreds of Americans without permission.

In a widespread emergency where supply lines have been threatened and millions of Americans are without essential resources because they failed to prepare, the government will swoop in and attempt to take complete control.

They will enter our homes and search them without a warrant. They will confiscate contraband. And they will take any ‘excessive resources’ that you may have accumulated. This includes food, toiletries, precious metals and anything else emergency planners and officials deem to be a scarce material.

Expect it. Prepare for it.

Casey Research: “There’s a Nationalization of Global Resources Occurring Now”

As economic conditions around the globe deteriorate and super powers vie for military, political and financial position, governments are increasingly putting their focus on the acquisition of resources.

In China, where the government essentially owns all aspects of the economy, national wealth funds are being rapidly diversified into everything from agricultural resources and international energy exploration, to precious metals and rare earth minerals. Take, for example, the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 2008, which the People’s Republic cited as a political annexation. While politics certainly played a role, there was a much more sinister and strategic power-play at the core of the military occupation. Tibet is rich in one key resource that China lacks for its 1 billion strong population – fresh, clean water. That alone is motivation enough to send in the army when your own rivers and eco-systems have been destroyed because of unsustainable manufacturing practices.

The U.S., for its part, is very much involved in similar strategic machinations. Given the trillions of dollars being generated, who could realistically deny that our primary purpose for military hegemony in the middle east is focused solely on the acquisition of cheap oil resources (Iraq) to keep the U.S. economy afloat and rare earth deposits like uranium (Afghanistan) that provide essential components for the defense industry?

Countries all over the world, large and small, are racing to get their hands on anything of value, and they are actively and without regret nationalizing once private industries across the board.

It’s happening as we speak.

You look at what’s just recently happened in Argentina. In 2012 Argentina basically nationalized the oil sector and with that it had a major spillover effect.

From there, look at Venezuela and Bolivia, and what happened in the last ten years. The same situation.

This is a cold war of resources.

A big pinch of resources is really happening where these national oil companies are kicking out these foreign exploration companies.

And it’s going to become a major, major issue moving forward.

You look at Venezuela… they’ve actually decreased their oil production since Chavez has been in power.

There’s a nationalization of global resources occurring now.

It’s difficult to paint with a broad brush, but I really like following the smart money – the management teams that truly understand, not just the commodity, but the political minefield of where they’re at.

Listen to energy expert Marin Katusa of Casey Research discuss the geo-political strategy of resource domination, learn how to spot trends that will change the face of how resources are shared and acquired over the coming decade, and develop investment strategies to protect and grow your wealth in our ever-changing global landscape:

Interview via Future Money Trends

With the U.S. already in fiscal and economic trouble, leaders of nations all over the world are making moves to restrict our access to key commodities and resources. Some of them, including China and Russia, are no longer using the U.S. dollar in trade, and are switching to gold or other instruments.

They’ve seen how political forces within the U.S. government have progressively weakened the domestic availability of key commodities like oil, food, and our power grid supply originating from coal and nuclear. Special interests, through legislative mandates and regulations, have created a national security situation that could prove disastrous in the future, as the United States will be wholly dependent on foreign supply for essential resources needed to run our country on every level.

With the global grab for resources happening in full force, the long-term effect will be ever more scarcity and higher prices. This is inevitable, because as the global population continues to put more strain on the system and more people in places like India and China increase their quality of life, most political leaders will opt to take care of their domestic requirements before those of the United States.

Thus, the only option for those concerned with this long-term trend is to continue investing their wealth into physical commodities. For some, that’s reserve food, tools, land, precious metals and sustainable energy practices. For others, who have retirement portfolios or personal savings, diversifying into unconventional assets that will thrive when others collapse in value will be the key to maintaining and growing wealth.

Doug Casey: There’s Going to Be a Huge Change of Ownership Over Global Resources *Video*

International man and well known investment strategist Doug Casey warns that the world’s economic, financial and monetary systems have passed the point of no return and a change of ownership over global resources will soon take place.

At the 2012 Investment Conference in New Orleans, Casey explains why neither Presidential candidate will change anything, where the real wealth in the world is found, why gold is a must-own survival asset, and what to expect next:

We’re going to go through a really, really rough spot starting anytime between tomorrow morning and the next year.

We’re exiting the eye of the hurricane where we’ve been in since 2007… We’re going into the trailing edge of the hurricane, it’s going to last a long time, and it’s going to be very, very severe.

All the real wealth in the world – the skills in peoples’ hands, the knowledge in their minds, the factories, the farms – that’s all going to be here. It’s not going to go away.

It’s just the financial system, the economic system that’s going to collapse.

There’s going to be a huge change of ownership for those things, which is going to be very unpleasant and inconvenient for a lot of people.

It is beyond the point of no return as far as I am concerned for Europe, and for Japan, and the U.S., and China – all the developed economies, quite frankly.

Gold remains the only financial asset that’s not simultaneously somebody else’s liability.

All of these governments all over the world are printing up trillions of currency units and they’re accelerating the pace of doing so.

There’s going to be a panic into gold. There’s going to be a mania in gold. There’s going to be a bubble in gold in the future.

Even though, as we speak now, it’s at $ 1700, it’s no longer cheap, but it’s going a lot higher…

We’re looking at the biggest economic upset since the industrial revolution.

…[Predicting the price] is crystal ball gazing; it depends on how stupid the government is and how out of line the mob psychology becomes.

But, by the time this comes to a peak I wouldn’t be surprised – in real terms, today’s dollars – to see the equivalent of $ 5000 per ounce.

Of course, that may be 10 or 15 considering how badly they’re going to inflate the currency…
