GOOD NEWS: New Head of HHS Was Responsible for Making Outrageous Government Shutdown Decisions

Guest post by Marguerite Bowling

President Obama’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services led the federal government’s response during last year’s “shutdown”—which included officials erecting barricades around open-air monuments.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell—who was deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, among other roles—currently serves as Obama’s director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Obama formally announced today that he will nominate Burwell to replace outgoing HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, whose resignation went public yesterday.

“When the government was forced to shut down last October…Sylvia was a rock, a steady hand,” Obama said in a Rose Garden ceremony this morning. He repeatedly praised Sebelius for her leadership and noted that Burwell’s “prudent manager” skills would be needed for the “tough challenges” of running the nation’s health agency.

The government largely closed down after Congress failed to enact a continuing budget resolution providing funds for fiscal year 2014. During the 16-day shutdown, 800,000 federal workers were furloughed, the National Zoo’s “panda cam” went dark, and the National Park Service set up barriers to open-air monuments, citing security concerns.

Sebelius, widely blamed for the botched rollout of the Affordable Care Act’s online health exchanges and other mishaps, said HHS was making “tremendous progress” to implement the health law known as Obamacare.

One more glitch plagued Sebelius, though, toward the end of her remarks. ”Unfortunately, a page is missing,” she said calmly, before ab-libbing the remainder.

She leaves after five years, despite saying only days earlier that she would stay with HHS through November.

Burwell said that she looks forward to further implementing Obamacare. Among lawmakers and pundits praising the nomination was Sen. John McCain (R–Ariz.), who said on Twitter: “Sylvia Burwell is an excellent choice to be the next #HHS Secretary.”

However, Burwell could be in for a tough confirmation process. Although she was easily confirmed by the Senate a year ago to head OMB by a vote of 96-0, this time — ahead of the mid-term elections – she could face resistance, as Politico reported.

GOOD NEWS: Titanium shields to be added to Tesla batteries to prevent untimely explosions

The headline says it all: “Tesla Model S To Get Titanium Battery Shield, Plus Deflectors:”

Tesla Motors announced this morning that it will fit three new underbody components to all Model S electric cars to add further protection against impacts from road debris, which caused a pair of fires in its cars last fall.

Those two Model S cars were severely damaged when their battery packs, mounted under the floor, were pierced by road debris and subsequently caught fire.

A third Tesla fire occurred in Mexico after a Model S was stolen, run off the road at high speeds, and through a reinforced concrete wall, tearing off wheels and totaling the car.

No one has been injured or killed in any Tesla fire; drivers were able to pull over, park the cars, and walk away following a warning from the cars’ monitoring system.

If only scientists could invent a car that would be impervious from road debris. Perhaps, I don’t know, maybe a combustion engine. It’s just an idea.

GOOD NEWS: Obama “Executive Action” Eases Immigration Restrictions on Terrorists

It wasn’t enough to have an Attorney General whose law firm gleefully defended terrorists involved in 9/11. And it wasn’t enough to have Muslim immigration to the United States skyrocket.

No, now Islamists who support terror are welcome, too. Which is pretty much the Wall Street Journal position on immigration.

The Obama administration has eased the rules for would-be asylum-seekers, refugees and others who hope to come to the United States or stay here and who gave “limited” support to terrorists or terrorist groups… The change is one of President Barack Obama’s first actions on immigration since he pledged during his State of the Union address last month to use more executive directives…

The Department of Homeland Security and the State Department now say that people considered to have provided “limited material support” to terrorists or terrorist groups are no longer automatically barred from the United States.

…Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, called the change naive given today’s global terrorist threats… “President Obama should be protecting U.S. citizens rather than taking a chance on those who are aiding and abetting terrorist activity and putting Americans at greater risk,” said Goodlatte, R-Va.

As an up-and-coming politician, Mr. Obama feted terrorists and marinated in anti-semitism.

Which makes this unlawful “executive action” on the part of the president all the less surprising.

And when innocent Americans die — and they will — remember who Obama is and what his administration did.

I GUESS WHINY, DEPRESSING LIARS AREN’T GOOD FOR RATINGS: State of the Union Nielsens Lowest Ever

An anonymous tipster writes, “…according to Niesen, Obama’s 2014 SOTU registered only a 20.7 household share rating… and according to the chart in the story below which goes back to 1993, no President has had a lower rating. I don’t know how far back you’d have to go to find a lower rating, but it is at least the lowest in over 20 years. He’s now historically boring and tough to watch.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 President Barack Obama delivered his second State of the Union address of his second term in office. The address was carried live from 9:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. on 13 networks and tape-delayed on Univision. The sum of the average audience for those networks was 33,299,172 viewers with a combined household rating of 20.7. The networks carrying the address live were CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, Azteca, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Al Jazeera America, Galavision and Mun2.

I wonder if Chris Matthews got a thrill up his leg when he saw the ratings?

The science is settled: Americans are tuning this colossal failure of a would-be president out.

Watch: Detroit Police Chief: “Good Americans with Concealed Pistols Translates Into Crime Reduction”

second-amendment-handgun

It’s easy for supporters of anti-gun polices to suggest that all law abiding citizens be disarmed and for gun ownership to be restricted, because most of them haven’t grown up in high-crime areas where they live under the constant threat of being assaulted, raped, mugged or murdered on a daily basis.

But when you see the reality of private gun ownership and how it actually helps to not only stop crimes in progress, but prevents them from happening in the first place, you can no longer ignore the necessity of having an armed citizenry, especially in cities and states where criminals will knowingly prey on innocents because they have absolutely nothing to lose.

Case in point: Detroit’s new police chief James Craig once worked in California, where it is a common occurrence for Sheriffs and Chiefs to deny concealed-carry weapons permits to their residents. They often do so without even reading the applications.

Concealed weapons permits at that time… it was an act of Congress to get one. Police chiefs just did not author or give approval for that.

As Craig noted at a recent press conference, this was his orientation, because everyone was doing it. He was, by all accounts, one of those government officials who restricted Americans’ ability to protect themselves.

But he soon changed his tune when he realized that maybe these gun toting radicals were on to something.

So I go to Maine and there are stacks of CCW’s, and I was denying them because that was my orientation.

What was interesting about Maine [is there are] lots of concealed weapons permits.

My orientation changed very quickly.

But here was the key with Maine… It’s one of the safest places in America. And it’s not like crime is non-existent. Certainly in Portland, Maine they had gangs, they had narcotics suspects, they had shootings.

But clearly suspects knew that good Americans were armed.

Craig made similar statements last month, where he specifically noted that law-abiding citizens carrying guns leads to lower crime rates.

“There’s a number of CPL (concealed pistol license) holders running around the city of Detroit. I think it acts as a deterrent. Good Americans with CPLs translates into crime reduction. I learned that real quick in the state of Maine.” (WJR 760 AM)

There’s a reason that self defense killings in Detroit spiked to 2200% above the national average in recent years. Detroit’s bankruptcy proceedings have left their police force decimated, response times in the double digits, and criminal running rampant. This left residents, especially in poverty-stricken areas, with no other option than to depend on themselves.

How many innocent people who want nothing more than to be left alone have preserved their way of life because they had a firearm on them when they were assaulted by those who would do them harm?

According to Chief Craig, over 300 legally armed Americans successfully defended themselves in Detroit last year. Opponents of concealed-carry will group that statistic with criminal homicide in an effort to cook the numbers, but in fact those incidents are considered justifiable homicides. There were likely hundreds, if not thousands, of other unreported incidents in which a firearm was used to prevent a crime.

We often hear anti-gun proponents tout “common sense” policies that restrict the ownership and purchase of self defense firearms, but common sense dictates that by doing so law abiding citizens will be the only ones without guns. When you restrict private gun ownership, only the criminals will have them. A perfect example of this is the city of Chicago, where private ownership is restricted. Cops are outnumbered 500-to-1 and have likened the city to tribal warfare in Iraq.

As James Craig suggests, when good Americans have access to firearms, and are allowed to carry and use them in situations where their lives may be threatened, most criminals will think twice before attacking a random person on the street.

Now, THAT’s common sense.
