Favorite Be Prepared: Emergency Preparedness

You may be installing the best security and burglar alarm system in your house. Additionally, you may have a large storage house of canned goods in case of outage or crisis, and you may have the most complete emergency kit in the house, but if you have don’t have an effective emergency plan, it will all go to waste. It actually takes less than an hour for you to formulate an emergency plan, have it printed and given to each member of the family.  Families need to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

Is your family prepared for the worst days? You don’t have to wait for the nightmare to come true for you to learn how to prepare for emergencies. Right now, you can actually grab a pen and paper, sit with the family and start discussing your emergency preparedness program. It may sound difficult at first to create an emergency preparedness program especially if you have not been through a crisis or natural disaster before. But to help you with this, it only takes a pen, paper and a little imagination or assumption of how an emergency disaster might happen.

What is emergency preparedness planning? Emergency preparedness planning refers to a set of activities and/or a list of reminders that will orient every member of the family on what to do in case of emergencies. A disaster can be of any form; it can be of natural causes like earthquake, tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunamis, which are obviously inevitable. A disaster can be an accident like gas explosion, electricity accident or outage, fire, crime-related like burglary, home invasion or it can even be financial or economical disasters, such as money crisis, power outage and so on.

Even when you are at home, when you expect safety, disaster can still strike at a moments notice. When you leave your loved ones at home, how will you contact them in the case of emergencies, where will you meet, who will they call? These are just some of the questions that can be answered when you do an emergency preparedness program with your family.

First, make sure that every member of the family is present. Then identify the fire exit routes for your house. Note that a fire exit is not only intended during a fire accident, it is also applicable for other disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, and flooding; even crime-related home invasions is on the list.  Exit doors are usually found in the kitchen, but what if the emergency took place in the kitchen, will the main door be a good option for exit. How about in rooms, do the kids have assigned routes to emergency exits?

The second thing you need to consider in your emergency preparedness program is a meeting place for your family. There might be case-to-case basis here. For example during a fire accident, determine which house or place your family members will be staying temporarily. If there is an incoming hurricane, orient the family to evacuate to a relative on a nearby city or state. It could be your favorite restaurant or a relative living nearby or the curb across the street from your house.

The third element in your emergency preparedness program is the list of contacts. Who, what, and where (Friends, Relatives) are living outside/inside your city or State? In the case of regional disasters such as hurricane or earthquake, it might be difficult to stay connected using local lines. Make it a point that every one in the family shares the same list of contacts. Your pets should also be a part of your emergency preparedness program. Unfortunately, however, pets are not allowed in evacuation and resettlement areas. You may leave your pets in a veterinary clinic or with a relative.

Assign a person who will pick up your kids when you cannot make it. Have a list of contact numbers of your neighbors. Keep a list of health conditions of your family. And inform everyone in the house about the location of floor drains, gas valves, water pipes, electrical boxes and fire extinguishers. Always check, keep, maintain and change your supplies in your emergency kits. You could be storing expired foods in your kits so make sure they are constantly checked for expiration. To avoid unnecessary spoilage of food in your emergency kits, make a schedule or calendar of maintenance or better yet eat the canned foods in your emergency kits.

As a final thought on emergency preparedness planning, teach your family on how to be responsive and manage stress during critical moments. Kids are typically afraid of scenes of injured people and are afraid of being alone. Keep your children calm and give assurance that everything will be all right. These emergency preparedness program tips are not enough for family.  Each family requires different things and the things discussed in this article are just the beginning.   Remember, being prepared eliminates many of the risks and ill effects of disasters are reduced.

Favorite Important Facts about the Pending Assault Weapons Ban!

Assault Weapons

Assault WeaponsWhether in America or anywhere else in the world our hearts break for the families of the victims from the recent malevolent acts.

The prospect of a renewed assault weapons ban in the wake of the CT school massacre has many people running scared.  There is fear our 2nd amendment rights are in jeopardy because of political upheaval and over reaction.

The media has put 100% focus on assault weapons as being the real problem.  As usual the media is wrong and here is why:

 1)   Statistics show, unlike handguns or shotguns, rifles account for only a fraction of homicides in the US.

  • FACT: of the 12,664 Murder Victims last year, an Assault Rifle killed only 323.
  • In both Paducah KY and the Columbine CO shootings NO Assault Weapons were used…  Bet you didn’t hear that in the Media. Why?
  • The Virginia Tech Shooter used handguns not Assault Rifles.
  • On the same day as the Newtown Massacre, 22 students were stabbed with a knife at a grade school in China. Bet you didn’t hear that in the Media.  Why?
  • The worst school massacre was not a shooting at all.
  •  Bath Township, MI 1927
    • 45 Dead and not a single shooting death.
    • Andrew Kehoe bombed the school because of a tax levy used to fund the school. Not mentioned in the media.

Visit http://wolffiles.blogspot.com/2012/12/worst-school-massacre-in-us-history-not.html for more info.

2)   Guns don’t kill people, it’s an inanimate object – it does not think or have feelings.

  1. Evil acts do not exist in inanimate objects such as knives, explosives or firearms.  An evil act solely exists in the hearts and minds of people.
    1.  A lot of folks will say Gun Control is the answer but they are wrong.  It’s a problem of our Mental Health Care System.
    2.   Too many Assault Weapons is not the problem.
  2. Decades of decomposing our inpatient psychiatric hospitals.
    1. Insurance companies only pay for social workers and nurses even for the extreme mentally ill rather than including psychologists and psychiatrists’.
    1. Most mentally ill patients today receive less than an hour a week (if that) with a social worker.
    2. Most nurses prescribe psychoactive medications.
    3. Gatekeepers for insurance companies turn most emergency room visits away for inpatient psychiatric treatment requests.
    4. No communication exists between law enforcement and psychiatry professionals about dangerous individuals.
    5. The problem solely rests on our broken health care system NOT GUNS.

Pre-Made Emergency Survival Kits Are they worth it?

Emergency Survival Kits

Survival Kits

You may not give it much thought but preparing your family for emergencies should be your top priority.  Relying on the government is no longer an option it could be weeks or months before relief arrives.  One only needs to look at the fiascoes with hurricane Sandy & Katrina.  FEMA is more concerned about maintaining the Government then they are about helping people.  The FEMA camps are constructed more like concentration camps then they are about providing a clean & safe environment for normal people to recover.

The bottom line, you really need to be prepared and have enough emergency supplies to last everyone in your family for at least 90 days.  However, for most people they cannot afford to spend their life prepping for the next big disaster.  Prepping can consume most of your time and money if you are not careful.  Luckily, there are many options available when it comes to pre-made Emergency Survival Kits.

There are two types of emergency kits available.  There are custom built and retail kits available on the market.  For quality, I would go with a custom built kit.  However, for inexpensive options the retail kits are the way to go.  Keep in mind, most retail kits are 72 hour kits (3 Day supply of food & water) normally used for bug out purposes.  If your emergency plan involves bugging out to a friend or relatives – 72 hour kits are perfect.

Emergency Food SuppliesFor those serious about prepping for disasters -  I highly recommend custom kits such as kits from My Patriot Supply.  They provide customizable food packages where you can pick and choose the contents provided.  In other words, if you don’t like Oatmeal then don’t choose it.  Other survival food services simply provide you with “their” predetermined selection of foods.  Let me tell you, they are not always the ones you like.  Check out my article on customizable food kits for more info.

Surviving Disasters – Basics of the Bug Out Bag

Around the world people get up and go to work, play sports, shop, entertain themselves and then a tsunami or earthquake strikes. All of us truly believe that we are safe and believe that nothing will happen to us because the government won’t let it happen and they will take care of us if a disaster does happen.

Watching and reading the news gives us the insight into all the disasters around the world daily. Not knowing when an earthquake might happen or some dam might break or a tsunami comes ashore and according to most news reports a great many people were left unprepared and they just had no idea what to do. Katrina was an excellent example for us to learn. The government took care of some of the people but it took a long time for them to act. A lot of people had to take care of themselves and helping each other out at first or many more people would have been lost. During the first few hours and then stretching into days we must prepare to take care of ourselves and our families. Friends should join together with friends to have a basic plan of survival. It is imperative that we all take care of our future.

I saw a train accident on TV and some deadly chemicals spilled with toxic fumes released into the air. Many people evacuated at once to save their lives. They just opened the doors to their homes and left with the clothes on their backs. They had no time to pack or get anything ready. This scenario really teaches us another reason for the bug out bag.

The bug out bag or go bag as it is known in some areas is large or small. Every member of the family should have one because of their particular items needed. Depending on where you live will decide which type of bug out bag you need to pack. An urban dweller might want a different one than a country dweller. Make sure that they are large enough for each member of the family. Do not make them too large so they are heavy to carry. We are looking for a quick grab and leave lightweight bag. Always have an escape plan made up ahead of time with your family and friends so everyone can grab their bag and bug out quickly without confusion.

The first step is very important as it makes up the Identification items you will need. No matter where you go to seek help someone will want to know who you are. Make sure that these pieces of identification are legible and in waterproof packets. You just cannot start the help process without identification. These would include driver’s license, passports, insurance papers, medical cards, credit cards, bank accounts, and make sure there is some identification with a photo on it for the younger people. A good family photo can help as it is extremely important to prove that they are family members.

The second step would include first aid items such as a complete kit. Make sure that it will have any medications that you are taking. When items start crashing down you just might be injured and need immediate help.

The third step is always food and water. You can get a complete kit with varieties of Meals Ready To Eat for a day, week, month or year for yourself or a family. You will also need water purification tablets and equipment. Most complete kits have these in them. The kits might also include waterproof containers for the food products and for matches, cooking equipment, eating utensils, sleeping bags, tent and other items needed as it might be several days until help arrives or shelter is found. Other items that might be included are duct tape, bathroom tissue, soap, toothbrush and paste, pen and paper, bible, paperback books, cards and games, hat, glasses, lantern, a hand crank generator weather radio, flashlight, sewing kit and a tool kit such as a surge tool.

The fourth step is clothing. Have several changes of underwear, socks, pants, coat and shoes or boots should you need a dry pair. You can buy some very thin and lightweight rain coats made of plastic and a very small umbrella.

You can always add items that you feel are very necessary for your survival and special need items. The message here is just be ready for your survival.

If you live in the country another option you might consider would be to have some Bowfishing Equipment [http://archeryonlineusa.com/AMS-Bowfishing-pro-combo-kit] for some nice fresh fish along with your Meals Ready To Eat [http://archeryonlineusa.com/emergency-food-kit].

Happy Straight Shooting
