Five Tips to Make Gardening Easier

5 Tips to Make Gardening Easier

Ever want to start up a garden, but get overwhelmed by how much work it is? It is actually a doable thing for most people, and you can have the garden of your dreams without spending all day working on it! Just follow these 5 steps and you will be well on your way.

1. Work Smarter, not harder. Think about the tools you are using and look to see if there is a more efficient way to do the same thing. There are so many different types of gardening hand tools out there, and a simple shovel won’t work for everything. Decide what you need to do ahead of time, and get the right tool for it.

2. Water, water, water. Obviously, having a garden isn’t going to work out for you if it isn’t getting enough water. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to stand outside with the hose all day. Again, work smarter not harder. You will lighten your load if you can figure out a trenching system, sprinklers, or a certain watering schedule. You don’t want to water when the sun is at its highest because the water will simply evaporate. It will also help to add compost or mulch to your soil because it will help the plant retain the moisture.

3. Try compost! Gathering compost of your own is a lot easier than you’d think. Get a big plastic bin with a lid, poke holes in the top, and start collecting. There are lots of things to put in your compost, like egg shells, old leafy greens, coffee grounds, cut grass, moss, pine needles, dead leaves, etc. This gives your garden the nutrients it needs to keep growing. You will start to notice that you never have enough of this, so keep it in the back of your mind before you ever throw anything away.

4. Fertilizers make the difference. There are two types of fertilizers that make the biggest difference: seed meals and ground limestone. You can find different variations of these two types of fertilizers everywhere, and the nice thing about it is they are both extremely affordable. The seed meal helps to make sure that your plant is getting the nutrients it needs like nitrogen and other elements. The ground limestone has very similar effects, but they get the best effects when used together in a garden.

5. Pick your seeds wisely. Choosing heritage seeds for your garden will help to ensure that you actually grow something! On average, these types of plants end up with a yield that looks and tastes better. It is also convenient, because they are now selling hybrid seeds that are also resistant against more diseases or parasites. Check out your options at your local gardening store.

Follow these simple tips and remain attentive to the specific needs of your garden, and you will have a successful grow! For more information on seeds and other gardening options, click one of these 2 links to visit emergency preparedness websites who can help you grow more food.

The Importance of a Survival Garden

Non Hybrid Seed packs Survival Gardening the Preppers Universe way!

It’s important not to get caught up in our newest survival gadgets and to start thinking about long term survival through survival gardening.  Let’s face it food is a basic human need, being resilient and having the ability to grow your own food is important for survival.  Emergency freeze dried foods will not last forever.  Survival gardens offer you a chance to produce highly nutritious food for you’re family.

In recent years, survival gardens have enjoyed a resurgence as people look for ways to grow their own emergency food supply.  Gardens can be grown just about anywhere from backyards, apartments and community gardens.  There are container gardens, vertical gardens, raised bed gardens.  In fact, the options on gardening are numerous and at times can be down right confusing.

Being skilled in gardening gives you an advantage in a post disaster situation.  Not having to eat freeze dried food and/or out of a can is a delicacy not many can enjoy.  Most people in a post disaster situation will be pillaging for food within 3 or 4 days.  They simply are not prepared for the long haul.  Additionally, canning you’re own food can be fun and provide you with long term food storage.  Sign up for my newsletter at the end of this post and receive my EBook “The survival guide to canning & preserving” for FREE.

When starting you’re own survival garden there are a few things to keep in mind.  The first thing is deciding where to plant you’re garden.  Is it in you’re backyard, on your patio, in a raised bed, or a vertical garden?  Is the garden going to be inside or outside?  How much light is available in the area for gardening?  Are you growing in pots?  Are there other options that would work well?  As you can tell, there are many decisions and considerations when planning you’re garden.

There are many advantages to growing you’re garden in raised beds.  Raised beds are the best option for most people and produce the best results in a small space.  Survival type gardens thrive in raised beds and produce the most abundant and nutritious food because you have total control on the potting soil and there usually isn’t a problem with weeds.

Here are a few advantages of raised beds:

  • Soil warms up faster in the spring
  • Water drains easily
  • Garden is tended from the edges, soil does not get compacted from walking on it
  • Loose soil is easier for seeding, transplanting and weeding
  • Grow more vegetables in smaller spaces
  • Grow safely even when the land is poor and heavily saturated with heavy metals
  • Fewer tools needed to help plant and care for the garden

Once you figured out where you’re garden will be planted, the next step is planning.  A garden plan is essential in making you’re garden grow efficiently and abundantly.  For example, does you’re plant need full sunlight, partial sunlight or if they grow in the shade.  Does one plant complement another?  Here is an excellent “Sample Planting Guide for Raised-Bed Gardens“.

Once you start with these beginning steps, you are well on your way to feeding you’re family for years with nutritious foods from you’re survival garden.  A garden is an easy thing to start but it does take time and effort to make it thrive.  However, in the end it is worth it for the fresh food, the money you will save, and the new survival skills learned. It will help you feed you’re family in the regular world and in the post disaster apocalyptic situations or as preppers like to say WTSHTF.

Prepare for Disaster by Owning Precious Metals

Silver bars Owning Precious Metals for Survival

If you have been alive in the past few years it is no secret that disasters can happen within the blink of an eye. Whether it be a natural storm or military invasion, the need to be prepared for anything is evident all around us. While your typical disaster preparation might consist of securing shelter and enough food to last you an undisclosed amount of time, the need for precious metals such as gold and silver might not be so obvious.

In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a person who is equipped to survive disaster who would consider precious metals a necessity to purchase. The fact of the matter is that gold and silver have been valuable for thousands and thousands of years, whereas your paper money has not. If a disaster were to ever happen, the value of your paper money would go right out the window because, at the end of the day, it is just paper. Gold and silver are two great resources for securing and storing your own wealth, especially in the face of a disaster. The simple fact that the scarcer something is, the more value it has, should be ringing through your head. Once disaster strikes, don’t be caught without precious metals as they will likely be incredibly beneficial for you. To fully understand the need to own precious metals, you must first understand the basics about buying gold and silver. These will be discussed in the following few sections

Coins vs. Bars

Silver CoinsThe most basic difference in precious metals is the difference between gold and silver bars and coins. While you may be aware that both exist, they are incredibly different entities, even if the weight and purity levels are the same. Precious metals coins are used as currency in countries and are only able to be produced domestically in the country where they are valued as legal tender. Bars, however, are not legal tender and are produced by a variety of privately owned mints from all over the world.

Since coins are produced only by the government of a single nation, they are much rarer and harder to find than bars that can be produced just as easily in Asia as they can in Europe, and so on. The price and value of a coin, while it is determined by the amount of gold or silver in it, is also decided by just how scarce the coin is. Bars are produced in abundance and while they do come from different companies, a 1 ounce gold bar is a 1 ounce gold bar regardless of who produced it. For your disaster preparation needs I would suggest that you invest in gold bars as they can be found, resold, and bought for less money than most coins. Bars, like coins, come in all shapes and sizes so it is vital that you only make a purchase that you can afford.

Timing Your Buys

Time to Buy SilverLike stocks on the stock market, the spot value of gold and silver is always changing. Sometimes the value goes up and sometimes it goes down, that is just the nature of the beast. Your challenge, however, is to purchase your lot of gold or silver when the spot value of the metal has taken a momentary dip. If you buy precious metals when their values are too high, you run the risk of losing money shortly after your purchase.

While gold and silver may move up and down in the short-run, these metals have almost always been on the rise in the long-run, which is why they are viewed as such safe investments. By making a purchase when the price of gold or silver is down relative to its recent numbers, you are not only making the most of your money but also giving your investment the opportunity to grow in value.

Where to Buy

Now that you know what to buy and when to buy it, the next thing we must look at is where you can purchase gold and silver bars and coins. The most classic, old-fashioned way of purchasing precious metals is to seek out your local coin shop and make a purchase from them. This is a fine way of going about things so long as you are in an area where coin shops are. Some people are not so lucky and would have to end up travelling quite a distance to the closest coin shop in order to make a purchase, and that’s assuming that they even have the item you are looking for in stock.

With the advance of the Internet and e-commerce, buying gold and silver online is quickly being the most attractive way to purchase. Not only do you not have to leave your house in order to buy the metal, it is then delivered to your door at your convenience. If you have no idea where you can go about buying gold or silver online, that is OK, because wheretobuysilver.com is an all-inclusive resource which shows you only the best online dealers. It is hard to know who to trust on the Internet, but wheretobuysilver.com makes it just a little bit easier.

The Controversial Documentary on ET’s & Free Energy

Sirius – The Documentary

Synopsis Video

View Official Trailer Here

Sirius - The DocumentaryI know what you might be thinking, why is a prepping site hosting a documentary on ET’s and Free Energy.  One reason, image the possibilities of free energy and what it can do for our planet.  Free energy is clean energy as it is portrayed in this film.  For the record, I personally do not believe in Free Energy, you can’t get blood out of a turnip and it takes energy to make energy.  However, I do find it an interesting subject and hope to be proved wrong one day.

The documentary is very controversial and looks to be entertaining.  I’m a big Ancient Aliens Fan and this film follows along those same lines.  I decided to host this film because it’s fun and entertaining.  When you watch the film take it with a grain of salt.  You may or may not be a believer, the point is to have fun.

Steve Greer, an American osteopath and ufologist who founded the Orion Project, said

“Well here’s the vision that can guide the world and inspire us. Once we have these zero point
sums of energy, we can alleviate our planet of the destructive methods of harness resources from
it. Free energy will be the great equalizer.

This notion of poverty will be eliminated, because we will have even the most remote societies powered by this free grid, which will give them water and other resources without having to continue with these destructive extraction methods that are dominating our world today. Universal education can come into play as well, and we can put an end to notions of bigotry, and homophobia and superiority complexes that all stem from of atavistic struggle for a dominance of the zero sum game of resources. So I feel that once the world has woken up, we can end this cannibalism of our planet, we can bring justice to this planet, and with that justice, we can have peace.”

SIRIUS is the largest crowd funded documentary in history. So we’ve had complete public funding and have not turned to any corporations or media conglomerates to aid in the production of the film. And we’ve taken a non-traditional approach to distribution as well. We are releasing SIRIUS through a company called YEKRA in Los Angeles that will allow all of the backers and organizations associated with the film, along with all of the online communities interested in the subject material, to be their own distribution center.

How to Form a Community Group During a Disaster

Preppers Universe Guide on Building Community Groups

Community Groups

In the event of a disaster, most people form together with compassion, unity and courage.  However, It is extremely crucial to form a community group during a disaster.  Major disasters will overwhelm local first responders, leaving your family vulnerable to major risks and threats.  The best way to protect your family is to get your community involved during a disaster in activities that protect the whole community.  Important Note: This article is geared toward building community groups after a disaster happens.

When a major disaster strikes you will need to manage your emotions.  The initial shock and mourning of the disaster will bring on fear, anxiety and depression.   It will bring on a sense of being overwhelmed and that things are not real and it will feel like a bad dream.

Depending on events, people will feel relief over their own family’s survival.  However, guilt over others who have been hurt or perished will set in.  This is why forming a community group is so important and it is the right thing to do. Helping others is the key to surviving during a disaster.  When a major event happens it is important to help your “family first” and then become a community leader and teach others to be prepared and to protect the community.looting

The social norms are thrown out the window during major disasters.  Look what happened during Hurricane Katrina, there was looting, pillaging and major chaos.  People were not prepared for that type of disaster and panic and confusion set in and everyone was in it for themselves.  People were robbing each other on the streets.  When this type of chaos happens there is strength in numbers and having a community group formed together will bring more protection for your family and your neighbors families.

Once the initial chaos of the disaster settles in and your family is safe, canvas you’re neighborhood and look for people who need help and/or are willing to join you’re community group.  I store extra provisions of food for the purpose of handing out to my neighbors as a “piece offering” and to ease their tensions of what just happened.  This shows you care and it makes them feel comfortable joining you’re group.

I plan going up and down the entire block of my neighborhood to find people willing to join my community group.  The size of you’re group depends on the size of you’re neighborhood.  When you find enough people who can effectively watch over you’re neighborhood, find out how many families have weapons. It is important to find people who are willing to stand sentry watches.  Similar to neighborhood watch programs.

A good way to protect you’re community during a disaster is to block access to you’re neighborhood with road blocks at each end with a couple of sentries (guards) checking ID’s of people coming into the neighborhood.  If they don’t live there or have family there don’t let them in.  Depending on where you live and the size of you’re neighborhood it may be difficult to find enough people to stand guard 24 hours a day.  It may be easier to have a couple of roaming sentries walking the neighborhood confronting anyone that looks out of place.  The choice is up to you’re particular community group.

Now you’re neighborhood is somewhat protected from utter chaos and looting.  The community group can concentrate on the needy.  From those who did not prepare for the disaster and don’t have enough provisions to feed their family.  To those that were injured and need special care.  Hopefully, most people in the neighborhood have enough provisions to feed their family for at least 1 week.  If you need to get more food, leave the community in groups of four to find food.  A group of four is small enough not to be noticed and large enough to protect each other.

In your outreach to form a community group “during” a disaster it is important to teach others to be prepared and to better cope with the situation you are currently facing.  At this stage, planning is essential even if it seems like there is little time. Time is precious and your group needs to decide where to spend their time for the best investment. You’re goal is no doubt to have the best possible response to the situation.

The best response is:

  • Formed by the needs of the community (Goal Based)
  • Determine the minimum amount of resources necessary to accomplish goals
  • Avoid unnecessary duplications of effort
  • Sustainable for as long as needed

Under the circumstances, if you satisfy the criteria above you are on you’re way to a sound post-disaster response.

General outline to forming groups in post-disaster scenarios:

  • Manage You’re Emotions
  • Help you’re family and make sure they are safe
  • Help you’re neighbors
  • Offer food to those who need help
  • Find like-minded neighbors willing to join you’re community group
  • Find out who has weapons for protection
  • Form sentries or roaming neighborhood watch teams
  • Hold face to face meetings with group and form goals
  • Determine amount of resources necessary to accomplish goals
  • Avoid duplicated efforts
  • Make goals sustainable for as long as needed

In a post-disaster scenario, you should brace yourself for long term recovery within you’re community.  The stress levels are high and the conditions are new; responses are limited; and there is significant chance of future, additional negative events such as continued flooding, fire, aftershocks, looting, chaos or disease outbreaks.  The key is to manage you’re emotions and become the community leader and find like minded individuals who are willing to help protect those around them.
